  • Their role will be to support the management and coordination of activities between Chilean public services and their local counterparts, in order to identify and establish contact with investors and priority projects for the Chilean State.

The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, has appointed attachés in technology, investment, culture, cooperation, human rights and the press. They will be in charge of positioning Chile’s image abroad, as well as promoting cooperation initiatives to strengthen capacities and attract international talent and investment.

Investment attachés have been established for the first time at the presidential level. Their role will be oriented towards supporting the management and coordination of activities between Chilean public services and their local counterparts, in order to identify and establish contact with investors and priority projects for the Chilean State.

Who are the attachés?

InvestChile will have a presence in France, Italy and Canada from March. Professionals with extensive experience in foreign investment promotion have been chosen for these countries.

Cristián Sagal will take up the position in France. He holds a Degree in Agricultural Engineering and a Master’s in International Business from the Iéseg School of Business in Lille, France. He also holds diplomas in food innovation, the circular economy and negotiation from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Sagal has experience in both the public and private sector. He spent five years at InvestChile as an investment promotion executive and a food industry expert, where he also led the management of teams.

In Italy, the position will be taken up by Francisca Müller. She holds a Degree in Business Management and a Master’s in Economy from the Universidad de Chile. To date, Müller has served as a counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Chile to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris. She previously worked for more than two years in InvestChile’s Research and Business Intelligence areas.

Francisco Javier Appelgren has been appointed to Canada. He holds a Degree in Law and a Master’s in International Law with special reference to Investments, Trade and Arbitration from Heidelberg University, Germany. Appelgren was an advisor to InvestChile’s Legal Division for almost two years. He previously served as legal advisor in the coordination of trade facilitation and trade policy at the Treasury Ministry.

Great news for Chile

«It’s great news that the agency is expanding its direct operation capacity in three such important markets», emphasized the Executive Director of InvestChile, Karla Flores. «The new attachés will allow us to speak directly with companies’ head offices, in order to accelerate decision-making for their projects in Chile. This role can make a big difference in the context of international uncertainty in which we find ourselves», she added.

She also highlighted the technical profile of the attaché offices in promoting and attracting foreign investment to Chile. «This is important, considering that we have ambitious goals and the need to attract investment that boosts key sectors and benefits job creation».

According to data from Chile’s Banco Central, the markets of Europe and North America represent 60% of the country’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) stock.
