In a new #InvestChileTalks webinar, Energy Minister Juan Carlos Jobet talked about Chile’s energy transition and its National Hydrogen Strategy.
InvestChile, the Foreign Investment Promotion Agency, organized the webinar “Chile: Energy Transition and Green Hydrogen” in which the main speaker was Energy Minister Juan Carlos Jobet, who spoke about public policy in the sector as well as business opportunities to more than 20 executives of Chinese companies.
The webinar, which formed part of the #InvestChileTalks cycle of events, was opened by Chile’s ambassador to China, Luis Schmidt, and the acting director of InvestChile, Juan Araya, who stressed that, in 2019, China led InvestChile’s portfolio of projects, accounting for 31 projects worth a total of US$4,852 million.
“These figures reflect the interest that exists in investing in Chile, considering that, in 2016, we only had five projects by Chinese companies in our portfolio for around US$310 million. And that interest has not stopped growing … even in the current situation, five new Chinese companies entered our portfolio this year,” reported Araya.
In his presentation, Minister Jobet explained the main aspects of Chile’s energy transition as well as its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050, transforming the country into a leader on clean energy in the region. In addition, he talked about part of the National Hydrogen Strategy that will be launched shortly.
Minister Jobet pointed out that Chile has some of the world’s greatest potential for producing low-cost renewable energy, with broad political agreement on regulatory and environmental matters. “Chile’s potential in renewable energy is more than 70 times its current installed capacity and, in solar energy, costs have come down by 80% since 2010,” he noted.
After his presentation, the companies had the opportunity to voice their doubts and concerns, which were answered by Minister Jobet.
